TomTom is one of the first names in vehicle navigation systems. In fact, TomTom is the best selling GPS system in the world. Those shopping for an affordable GPS option often choose the TomTom One 3rd Edition, because it is loaded with features without carrying a high price tag.
The 3.5-inch touch screen on the TomTom One is just the right size for use in the car. It is large enough that you can easily see it while driving, but small enough that it does not take up too much room on your dashboard. The device can be taken off of your dashboard and placed in your pocket or briefcase if needed. The touch screen feature makes it easy to navigate while driving. It is coated with an anti-glare coating so that it is visible even in bright sunlight. The TomTom uses voice navigation and can be set to use either a male or a female voice. Turn-by-turn spoken directions ensure that you arrive at your destination without any trouble.
This edition of the TomTom is preloaded with maps of the United States and Canada. You can set up the device so that it alerts you to points of interest and even special driving situations, such as school zones. The “Help Me” emergency feature allows you to find hospitals, gas stations, or other services while driving in an unknown area. Also, the MapShare software installed into the device updates your maps instantly. Other TomTom users can update maps, which are then uploaded to your unit, making the maps as accurate as possible in spite of changing road conditions.
There are a few features of the TomTom that can sometimes be a hindrance. First, the device is not equipped with text-to-speech, which is found in some more expensive models. Some of the icons on the display screen are small, which can make using them while driving difficult. You will want to program the TomTom before you leave, to avoid this dangerous situation. The unit can only be charged through your car or computer via a USB cable, not through a power outlet. There is no memory expansion card, but the device has 1 GB of memory, so more memory is rarely needed.
In spite of these potential downsides, the TomTom One 3rd edition is a great portable GPS device for those looking for a quality unit at an affordable price. It has enough memory and features to get you where you need to go without a problem, yet the price tag makes it affordable for most people. If you are in the market for an affordable GPS unit, then this is one you definitely need to consider.
